Here’s the situation: I put some frozen-solid chicken breasts (boneless) in the crock pot with some broth and a lot of water and spices. I did this at 12 noon, and accidentally set the crock pot to ‘warm’, not hot.
I realized my mistake 4 hours later, at 4:00, and changed the setting to HOT. So the chicken was frozen at 12, and sat for 12-4 on only the WARM setting. From 4 – 8, it’s been on HOT.
I’m curious if this chicken will be safe to eat, or if that’s a mistake?
I’m thinking about letting this run until 10-11 tonight on HOT, so that it would have been initially on warm from 12-4 then on HOT for 6-7 hours total. Will this be enough to kill off any bacteria and make the chicken safe?
I’m thinking yes, but I’d like to know others thoughts on this. Thanks!
Yes, it wll be OK. You should keep the hot food over 140F to prevent bacterial growth; cold at below 40F. I believe a crock pot on "warm" would exceed 140F. And I’ve used the setting many times with frozen chicken. 6-7 hours on HOT should kill ANYTHING! Don’t worry, when it’s done, put it in the refrigerator immediately. God Bless.

I think yes–if you have a meat thermometer you can check the temperature of the meat. If it is over 160 I think you are safe.

It should make it hot enough. As long as the chicken has been cooked throughly, you shouldn’t have anything to worry about. If after your done cooking it and your still worried, stick it in the microwave for about 2 mins and you’ll heat it enough to kill an left over bacteria. The chicken will be done when its cooked all the way.

its okay. but once its very very hot then only warm up a little bit in the microwave. i would not reheat in the oven… and only heat up a serving size because too much reheating you can get very sick…..

It should be perfectly safe, I do that all the time with meat and have never had any problems, it’s basically like you defrosted the meat and marinated it at the same time.
