when boiling a large pot of water?
… gas stove, electric water heater

a. putting cold tap water in the pan and heating on the stove til boiling

b. waiting for the tap water to get hot, then heating the rest of the way on the stove til boiling

thanks :)

It doesn’t matter. All the water that enters your house is the same temperature. It takes the same amount of BTUs to heat it to a given temperature no matter what appliance does the work.

Even if the water heater and stove use the same amount of energy to heat a pot of water, waiting for the water to warm up means not only did you let good water go down the drain, you also heated all of the water left in the pipe between the heater and your faucet.

Also, cold water is better for you. Hot water from the tap is more likely to pick up chemicals from your pipes.
