My mom just did that right now, yes the beans and water are very hot.
Is it safe?
It’s sitting on the counter without it’s lid on..she said when it cools put the lid on and put it in the fridge.
I meant health wise is this safe to do?
Thanks for the answers and yes I also think the plastic molecules could seep into the food, at such high temperatures.
I just wanted to see if some people thought the same as I did.
Are you asking if its OK for the tupperware, or are you asking if this creates a food safety issue?
I believe that tupperware is heat resistant. If this is true, then nothing will happen to the tupperware. If not, then it will melt.
As far as food safety is concerned, the faster food cools down, the least likely it will be able to grow harmful pahtogens that can make you sick. The danger zone for food is the temperature range of 41 F – 140 F. Cooling the beans quickly to 41 F or below will make it safe. Bacteria thrives and multiplies within the temperature danger zone. Especially with something rich in protien and a high moisture content, like beans.
Restaurants are requried by the health department to cool their foods very quickly. Food must be brought down in temp from 140 to 70 F within two hours. It then must cool from 70 F to 41 F in four hours for a total of a 6 hour cool down time. If people cooking at home follow some of the simple rules that restauants have to follow, then a lot of food poisioning at home can be prevented.
Making an ice bath for the beans will cool it very quickly. Fill the sink with ice cubes and cold water. Set the pan of beans in the ice water and stir frequently. Don’t use a plastic container because plastic will act as an insulator and will not allow the food to cool quickly. A lid should not be put on the beans until they are down to 41 F.
I’m sure you really didn’t want to know all this stuff… but there it is.
I heard this on a cooking show, but think it’s false.
You are right – think about it: Does it take hot water or cold water longer to freeze? Hmmmmmm….. you need your own cooking show!

I was always taught to soak my pots and pan with water after I am done using them. My room mate thinks that they will get ruined by putting them in water when they are hot. Is this true?
well when one hears the scorching of the hot meeting cold, that does sorta make one wonder what’s happening to that pan. getting warped, more scroched.

I have actually been keeping my crockpot filled with hot water to steam the air since changing the filter in the humidifier is a hassle and costs me time and money.
All a humidifier does is slowly evaporate water. Your method does the same thing but is far more dangerous (a fire hazard.)
The potential problem is with overheating caused by your pot running out of water. A good humidifier will have an automatic shut off to prevent this from causing a fire. Also you may not need a filter in a humidifier, that is in there for people that have allergies. A humidifier will also use less electricity than a pot on a stove.
