RC How-To: Unglue Tires, with acetone

Posted by admin on May 24th, 2010 and filed under boil water electric | 18 Comments »

The easiest way to remove the tires from your RC’s wheels so that you can reuse either or both. No baked rubber smell to overwhelm your house, no dangerous handling of foams soaked with boiling water. Acetone does all the work for ya! Questions or comments? Where can you get the same color of silver paint HPI sprays on there stock Savage X rims? I did this and I lost the paint on my rims and I now need to find the right color of paint so I can repaint them. On the bright side though this did work great.

    I have indeed done …
I have indeed done many, many full sets of Proline tires, but they do use a wide range of different compounds. The Sand Paws, like the Speed Paws and Trac-a-Gators, use an exceptionally stiff compound which I think may be different from the normal M2/M3 pliable stuff, and I haven’t tried any of those. Their regular tires are all perfectly fine with acetone, but I just haven’t tried the weird ones.

It will definitely remove the glue. I have not specifically tested those tires though to see if they’re acetone-safe!

    Simple Green is a …
Simple Green is a green-colored, concentrated general household cleaner. I think it’s made with a chlorophyl-based product. Cleans really well and leaves no residue, and is especially good for getting maximum traction out of used tires. Try to find a good concentrated low-toxicity cleaning agent that isn’t oil-based.

I’ve never had foams damaged from this method in almost 10 years of doing it, *BUT* I have not yet tried closed-cell foam with it!

  16. gruzergrub5000 Says:

    does this not …
does this not damage the inner foam? i have some imex all T wides i wanna remove but their that closed cell foam, idk if this would damage the inner foam or the rubber on the tire.

  17. UltimateRCnetwork Says:

    The baking method …
The baking method works, but it can be hard to get right. It takes quite a lot of heat, an amount which can warp some wheels, and really stink the out of your house. It’s also particularly tougher when you have tires much wider than the wheels, and it leaves the glue on the tires, whereas acetone leaves everything clean.

Easy-Off works great for dechroming, but it’s horrifically toxic (incl. the fumes). I will be doing a couple different vids with it, though.

Also have you tried easy off for chrome??
    Thoughts?
